Description

The Edward Yoshiharu Sakuma & Kay Kubo Sakuma Education Honors Scholarship was established in 2018. The purpose of this fund is to address the shortage of qualified public school teachers in the state of Hawaii by providing scholarships to graduate students. Preference will be given to recipients who were awarded in the immediate prior year if such recipient continues to meet the eligibility requirements and is in good academic standing. Applicants must intend to teach in the public school system or equivalent in the state of Hawai'i. The donor also requires applicants to pursue a Masters, Doctoral, or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. Preference will be given in the following order of priority: attend University of Hawaii - Manoa, University of Missouri - Columbia, or the Teachers College at Columbia University; students who have graduated from a public high school or equivalent in the state of Hawai'i; students who major in education; and/or students who intend to teach mathematics or science.
