The Edward Yoshiharu Sakuma & Kay Kubo Sakuma Education Honors Scholarship was established in 2018. The purpose of this fund is to address the shortage of qualified public school teachers in the state of Hawaii by providing scholarships to graduate students. Preference is for recipients who were awarded in the immediate prior year. Applicants must intend to teach in the public school system or equivalent in the state of Hawaii. They must pursue a Master's, Doctoral, or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. Preference will be given in the following order of priority: students who attend University of Hawaii - Manoa, University of Missouri - Columbia, or the Teachers College at Columbia University; students who graduated from a public high school or equivalent in the state of Hawaii; students who major in education; and those who intend to teach mathematics or science.
