The Edward Yoshiharu Sakuma & Kay Kubo Sakuma Student Teaching Merit Scholarship was established in 2018. The purpose of this fund is to assist students with educational expenses related to the costs of being engaged in teaching while completing their degree program. Preference is for recipients who were awarded in the immediate prior year. Applicants must be those who intend to teach in the public school system or equivalent in the state of Hawaii. They must be enrolled in a student teaching experience or working as a teacher while pursuing further education. Preference will be given in the following order of priority: students who attend University of Hawaii - Manoa; students who graduated from a public high school or equivalent in the state of Hawaii; students who major in education; and students who intend to teach mathematics or science.
