Description

The Walter Byers Graduate Scholarship is the NCAA's most prestigious academic award, established to recognize and encourage outstanding student-athletes who combine the highest levels of academic achievement with a commitment to service and leadership. Named for the NCAA's first executive director, Walter Byers, this scholarship supports recipients as they pursue graduate study in any field of their choice. Applicants must be a graduating senior at an NCAA member institution. They must have demonstrated participation in intercollegiate athletics at the varsity level. Applicants must also demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, and service. Student-athletes who believe they qualify should be sure to contact their athletic academic counselor or Faculty Athletics Representative. Student-athletes are nominated by their institution's Faculty Athletics Representative or a designated administrator. Two recipients are recognized annually, one female and one male. Applicants must submit at least four letters of recommendation highlighting academic, athletic, and personal achievements from four different endorsers. One must be from a faculty member teaching in the discipline of the nominee's baccalaureate degree; one from a person able to judge the nominee's contribution to intercollegiate athletics; and two from endorsers of the nominee's choice.
