The AAG provides support for doctoral dissertation research in the form of small grants to PhD candidates of any geographic specialty. Applicants are eligible to apply for the award if they have been an AAG member for at least one year at the time they submit their application, they do not have a doctorate at the time of the award, and they will have completed all PhD requirements except the dissertation by the end of the semester or term following approval of their award. The applicant's dissertation supervisor must certify the applicant's eligibility by providing an official letter. The letter must certify that the applicant will have both (1) completed all the requirements for the PhD except for the dissertation by the end of the term or semester following the deadline and (2) is expected to have completed a PhD degree by the spring or summer semester of the next calendar year. Proposals should demonstrate high standards of scholarship. The selection committee will observe the purposes and preferences noted above when evaluating proposals. The Alaska Geological Society Scholarship will be awarded to students enrolled as a BA, BS, MS, or PhD candidate in geoscience or equivalent degree program. They must have a project or thesis/dissertation topic focused on Alaskan geology or related geoscience topics. Previous awardees shall be additionally required to provide the Scholarship Committee with a summary of how previous funds were used. Applicants for Alaska Geological Society scholarships may not be related to any member or to any family member of the Scholarship Committee or Board of Directors of the Society. Applicants must submit a project description if they are an undergraduate student, or a copy of your thesis proposal if they are a graduate student. A minimum of two letters of recommendation from those familiar with the applicant's academic record is also required. A third letter may be included if it contains important additional information. The goal of GSA's Expanding Representation in Geosciences (ERG) Scholarship is to foster the success of diverse students and to encourage their persistence in GSA as Members, role models, and future leaders in the geosciences. Undergraduate students from groups who are underrepresented in the geosciences are encouraged to apply for a scholarship. Qualified applicants must be U.S. Citizens studying at an accredited university or college in one of GSA's regional sections, including Canada and Mexico. GSA Diversity in the Geosciences Committee evaluates each application based on the applicant's (1) commitment to geoscience and potential to participate in GSA, and (2) potential to contribute to expanding representation in geosciences and GSA. The Marble-Boyle Undergraduate Achievement Award aims to recognize excellence in academic performance by undergraduate students from the United States and Canada who are putting forth a strong effort to bridge geographic science and computer science as well as to encourage other students to embark upon similar programs. Priority consideration will be given to any of the awardees who may be interested in participating in their Summer Intern Program. Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited United States or Canadian college or university. At the time of the application, the applicant must be no more than twelve months from graduation. Applicants must demonstrate a reasonable intent to embark upon a career or further education that will make use of their joint geographic science and computer science knowledge. Applicants do not need to be members of the Association of American Geographers, but they are strongly encouraged to consider membership. A letter of recommendation from the student's faculty advisor, department chair or program director must be submitted. The letter should clearly address both the applicant's academic performance as well as their potential for a career or further education that utilizes their geographic science and computer science background. The Darrel Hess Community College Geography Scholarship will be awarded to students from community colleges, junior colleges, city colleges, or similar two-year educational institutions who will be transferring as geography majors to four year colleges and universities. Applicants must also have completed at least two transfer courses in geography and plan to transfer to a four-year institution as a geography major during the coming academic year. Selection will be based on the overall quality of the application, scholastic excellence and academic promise. Financial need will also be considered.
