Eligibility

Henry & Chiyo Kuwahara Memorial Scholarship, with an application deadline in March, offers numerous awards that vary in amount.

Description

The Henry & Chiyo Kuwahara Memorial Scholarship was established by the estate of the late Henry and Chiyo Kuwahara. Mr. Kuwahara, a resident of Los Angeles, was a well-known investment and securities broker in Little Tokyo. Due to the Kuwaharas' strong belief in youth and the value of education, their estate funds a number of JACL scholarships. The scholarship will be awarded to entering freshman students, undergraduate students and graduate students. Entering freshman applicants must be high school seniors. Applicants must be planning to attend or be attending college, university, trade school, business school, or any other institution of higher learning within the United States in the Fall of 2026. Students deferring enrollment will not qualify for the 2026 scholarship program. Every applicant must be an active National JACL member. JACL membership is open to everyone of any ethnic background. Applicants must hold an Individual or Student/Youth Membership. A Couple/Family membership by a parent will not meet this requirement. March 2, 2026 is the deadline for entering freshman applications and April 3, 2026 is the deadline for all other or general applications. The application for entering freshman students is different from undergraduate and graduate students. Please visit the scholarship's website or contact the Japanese American Citizens League for more information.
