The International Citation of Merit is given every three years to an individual whose reputation is clearly visible through global activities in the field of literacy and whose activities are for the benefit of countries beyond their own. This award recognizes exceptional contributions that have significantly advanced literacy practices and education on an international scale. Recipients are celebrated for addressing critical issues and implementing innovative solutions that impact diverse communities worldwide. Nominees must be well known in the literacy field for their commitment to international research, practice, and/or advocacy. The focus of their work must be in a country/countries other than the one in which they reside. Nominees must serve as a researcher, scholar, academic, clinician, and/or school-based educator. Nominees must achieve measurable results that demonstrate support for the field of literacy. Nominees' global influence must be evident through publications, presentations, media, etc. To be eligible, a candidate must be an ILA member in good standing and maintain active membership through June 30, 2026. Supporting documentation is required and may be supplied in the body of the form, as a PDF attachment, and/or by linking to relevant material (such as a CV) provided that the source is reputable and up to date. Candidates may self-nominate or be nominated by a colleague. Please visit the award's website for more information.
