Eligibility

J. Waldo Smith Hydraulic Fellowship, with an application deadline in January, offers numerous awards that vary in amount.

Description

The J. Waldo Smith Hydraulic Fellowship is awarded annually to up to two graduate students in civil engineering who are ASCE members in good standing, with preference given to Associate Members. The fellowship supports tuition, research, and living expenses for students engaged in experimental hydraulics, specifically practical, laboratory-based investigations that advance understanding of hydraulic flow and test the validity of theoretical assumptions. Applicants must be continuing formal graduate education and submit a complete online application by January 15, including a signed contact form, personal essay, research proposal endorsed by their institution, budget statement, transcript, two recommendation letters (including one from faculty), and a resume outlining honors, activities, ASCE involvement, and work experience. Selection is based on the technical and societal relevance of the proposed research, its alignment with the fellowship's purpose, and the applicant's academic and professional contributions. Award amounts are determined annually by the ASCE Board of Direction and disbursed directly to the recipient.
