Description

Dedicated to continuing Pedro Zamora's legacy, the Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship is an award that supports the school costs of young activists and non-profit changemakers who work in their communities, and who carry Pedro's torch forward in the struggles for social and health justice. This scholarship is not exclusive to HIV/AIDS work and activism. Students who are urgently working on progressive change-making in other areas of health or social justice are eligible to apply. The scholarship is open to current or incoming undergraduate students, including high school seniors, enrolled or will be enrolled in a U.S. community college or four-year university. Students may qualify based on their proven leadership skills, community involvement, personal merit and the demonstrated desire to make a difference on issues of HIV/AIDS, public health, human rights and/or other health equity and social justice issues. Aside from the written personal statement and essay, applicants must submit a brief Personal Statement in video that explains why they believe themselves to be a good candidate for this scholarship. In the video, applicants must also briefly describe their HIV/AIDS and/or health equity or social justice work, leadership, activism, or field of study, and how their studies, career plans, or public service will contribute to those efforts. If applicable, applicants may also also reflect on how lived experiences have shaped their drive for social change. Applicants must also submit at least two letters of recommendation, which could be from teachers, mentors, program coordinators, supervisors/allies/community leaders, or other adult(s) directly involved and able to observe the applicant's health, racial or social justice work, leadership, or field of study.
