The scholarship shall be awarded to a current or former qualified submariner, or their DOD recognized spouse or child. The sponsor must have served at least 6 years active duty in submarine service or 8 years of active duty in submarine support activities. All otherwise retired or discharged veterans must have received an honorable discharge. Dependent children applicants must be a high school senior or be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a college or an accredited vocational or technical institute, who is working toward their first Associate's or Bachelor's degree. Dependent spouse applicants must intend to or be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student with a minimum of 12 credit hours per year in order to receive their first Associate's or Bachelor's degree. All scholars are selected on the basis of academic proficiency as well as commitment and excellence in school and community activities.
